SPS-500 Crosscut Saw: Going Against the Grain…

We have been developing crosscut saws (transverse cutting saws) for quite some time, continually refining their structural engineering and mechanical design.

Currently, our flagship model is the SPS-500—a machine that stands out in the market due to its unique feature: FULLY ELECTRIC OPERATION.

The machine requires zero compressed air to operate. While replacing pneumatic systems with electric actuators increases manufacturing complexity and upfront costs, this design choice delivers several distinct operational advantages:

Not every workshop immediately needs a dedicated crosscut saw. Many start with a standard miter saw and handle crosscutting manually. While feasible for small shops, growing small-to-medium businesses with daily crosscutting requirements need a more capable solution. Finding operators willing or able to maintain consistent manual production all day is increasingly difficult. Moreover, repetitive manual feeding increases operator fatigue and the risk of severe injuries.

Applications in Window Manufacturing and Timber Frame Construction

Machinists frequently upgrade from miter saws to engineered crosscutting systems for several key reasons:

  • High replacement costs from wearing out multiple miter saws per year (yielding rapid ROI on industrial machinery)
  • Improved operator ergonomics, comfort, and safety
  • The ability to process large timber cross-sections
  • Substantially higher throughput and efficiency

Large timber cross-sections are often the primary driver for upgrading. Engineered Solutions for Sawmills

Sawmill operators running pneumatic equipment frequently experience operational issues in sub-zero ambient temperatures. Electric drives eliminate temperature-related slowdowns; the mechanical crank drive operates reliably regardless of room temperature.

Smoother, Higher-Quality Cuts

While pneumatic actuators remain effective for high-speed cycle optimization—and are available in selected KUSING crosscut models—they present limitations when cutting thick cross-sections without blade chatter.

By contrast, electric crosscut saws allow precise, fine-tuned feed speed control. This enables the machine to clean-cut large 150×150 mm (6×6 inch) timber beams using a lower-kw motor without straining the drive system, structural frame, or saw blade.

Heavy-Duty Crosscut Saws for Automated Processing Lines

Alongside standard SPS models, KUSING offers heavy-duty, long-reach crosscut units: the SPS-500 LR (Long Rip) series. These heavy-duty units are designed for integration into processing lines, primarily for rough crosscutting logs, slabs, and cants prior to longitudinal gang ripping.

This workflow is highly advantageous for high-volume operations focused on fixed-length timber or softwood processing, where absolute edge finish is secondary to throughput.

For instance, in pallet manufacturing, 120 mm high cants are crosscut to length before passing through gang rip saws. Crosscutting the cant first eliminates the need to individually trim each board after gang ripping, saving significant production time. While handheld chain saws are a low-cost alternative, automated crosscut saws provide superior accuracy, safety, and production speed.
